The terra cotta objects are intended for semi-public spaces and aim to fill a gap between urban furniture and private garden furnishings. Italian villas and palace gardens are full of clay figures, vessels, and molded blocks that are individually modeled or pressed into molds and then fired. The advantages are good durability, free formability, and ease of manufacture. In gardens, terra cotta has a long tradition. The earthy, reddish-yellow hues harmonize with the green of the plants; the material ages in a characteristic way and reflects the light in warm tones. Industrially manufactured clay products such as perforated clay blocks for housing construction can be pressed through an extrusion die as a continuous clay strand. This yields precise, thin-walled sections that are then cut to length. For Villam, such sections are used as benches, tables, lettering, fences, luminaires, blocks for garden walls, and wall coping ornamentation. Only the size of the kiln sets a limit to the dimensions of these earthenware pieces for the subsequent firing. With higher firing temperatures, terra cotta develops a vitrified surface and achieves greater mechanical strength and frost resistance.
