Paralex variiert einmal mehr das Thema der Gelenkarmleuchte, die durch Jac Jacobsens Luxo von 1937 bekannt wurde. Statt die Federn von den Gelenkachsen aus zu einem Punkt in der Mitte der Arme zu spannen, erstrecken sie sich bei Paralex über die gesamte Diagonale des Parallelogramms von Gelenkpunkt zu Gelenkpunkt.

Für dieses entwurfsbestimmende Detail waren zunächst farbige Gummibänder vorgesehen, die später durch haltbarere, ebenfalls flache Stahlfedern ersetzt wurden. Ein flacher Leuchtenkopf mit LED-Licht befindet sich an der Stelle des Reflektors. Aus den kabelführenden Quadratprofilen wurden, wie bei Richard Sappers Tizio von 1972, (nieder-)spannungsleitende Flachstangen.

Bei Paralex wird das Motiv der parallel geführten Streben wie auf einen Schattenriss reduziert und dadurch die grafische Erscheinung überhöht. Diese Stilisierung lässt die ganz und gar technischen Gründe für das Aussehen ihres Vorbildes zugunsten eines weniger funktionalen, aber günstigen und gängigen Produktes in den Hintergrund treten.

Paralex is an innovative variation on the theme of the balanced-arm lamp that was made famous by Jac Jacobsen’s Luxo from 1937. Instead of spanning the springs from the joint axes to points in the middle of the arms, in Paralex they extend along the entire diagonal of the parallelogram, from one hinge point to the other.

Colored elastic bands were initially envisaged for this all-important feature of the design, but these were later replaced by more durable, flat steel springs. In place of the reflector is a flat lamp head with an LED light source. Like with Richard Sapper’s Tizio lamp from 1972, the square tubes with internal wiring have become (low voltage) conductive flat bars.

With Paralex, the motif of parallel struts is reduced to a silhouette, thereby dramatizing the graphic appearance. This stylization allows the absolutely technical reasons for the appearance of its archetype to fade into the background in favor of a less functional but cheap and common product.
